This saga of the hilarious Evo vs. iPhone videos produced by a Best Buy employee just got even better. When last we heard, Brian Maupin, 25, had been suspended by the retailer while it conducted some sort of investigation. His job hung in the balance. The investigation — which we have a hard time typing while keeping a straight face — concluded, and Best Buy chose not to fire Maupin, who then said thanks, but no thanks, and is looking for work elsewhere.

Takes some stones to do that, for sure. Good luck, Brian, and thanks for the laughs. Check out Best Buy’s statement and Maupin’s reaction — as well as the videos in question — after the break. [via TechCrunch]

People often ask me which CECT clone I find to be the “best.” This is a loaded question because the best phone for one consumer may not be the best model for someone else. Which phone works out to be your best fit is going to depend on the features that you hold most dear and use the most.

A few hours ago, Engadget started getting reports that the white HTC EVO 4G was making appearances at select Best Buy locations a few days early.  Now, we have a few confirmed reports of our own and images of a purchased white HTC EVO 4G have made it on to the web.  Best Buy has the exclusive selling rights on the white EVO until August, but we’re not so sure how many customers are really interested in the white version.  As we originally suspected, the white EVO isn’t fully white.  The front panel surrounding the touch screen and part of the handset’s side cover are still in the original black, making the white EVO 4G look more like a zebra than anything else.  If you asked us, we would suggest just sticking with the original black unless someone at HTC or Sprint realizes that a “white” phone needs to have more white than black on it.

The Motorola Charm, one of the devices being touted as a T-Mobile back to school special, appears to have made an appearance in a T-Mobile store. While there really isn’t much new to come from the small hands on that appears to have been had, we have learned that the device does have a touchpad on the back of the device similar to the Backflip. Sadly, we are still unaware of what Android version the device is actually running, or if the device will launch as the T-Mobile Basil, since that is what the packaging refers to this "project" as. Well, we can hope that since it has made its appearance in store now we will get a firm release date, as well as more specs on the device in the near future. [via TMoNews]

In the spirit of openness that surrounds the Android ecosystem, HTC has just released the kernel source code for the HTC EVO 4G.  While hackers and modders will have a heyday with the new code, HTC’s real intent in releasing it to the world is so application developers can take a peek at the changes that HTC has made to Android so that their applications run smoothly on HTC’s phones.   There has been a fair share of app developers who have complained about HTC’s customization of the Android platform since their changes don’t always play nice to a vanilla Android build.  Most manufacturers developing phones running Android have been making their own tweaks to the system over the past year or so, but HTC is the only one releasing their course code to the developer’s community.

Motorola Milestone

The wait for Android 2.2 continues, but the European Motorola Milestone apparently is in the midst of another update. MR2.5 reportedly comprises bugfixes and performance/stability improvements, which we certainly wouldn’t shrug our shoulders at. Random power cycling and force closes are said to be targeted, and the alarm clock and music capabilities are said to have been addressed. Check your phone or hit up the Motorola software update tool. [via The:Unwired]

Update: Whoops. Apparently Motorola jumped the gun, though you can get the update if you’re in Greece, which is nice.

Samsung and Motorola may be HTC’s spot in global smartphone sale, but that doesn’t mean HTC will simply roll over and let the competition take over.  HTC has just revealed their quarterly profits of $268 million on $1.88 billion in sales.  Those numbers come in at 33 percent higher than the sale numbers reported for Q2 of last year.  But the most astonishing figure might be that HTC has posted two record setting quarters in a row with Q2 outdoing Q1 by $280 million.  HTC has not released any figures on how many devices they sold in the second quarter, but we can assume that the lion’s share of their increased revenue and profits is coming from Android rather than Windows Mobile.

With Windows Phone7 set to debut within the next few months, we are confident that HTC will continue to post some great numbers and deliver some amazing devices.  For now, I guess we can just sit back and enjoy our Android phones and dream of mind-blowing phones HTC is working on with their big mountain of cash.
