HTC EVO 4G LTE

Getting your device on the latest version of Android is not always a quick process, but HTC has confirmed that Android 4.3 will be coming in mid February to the EVO 4G LTE on Sprint. Jason Mackenzie, President of HTC America, has replied on Twitter giving us some new information about the update. HTC will be pushing the code to Sprint for review in mid-January, and they expect to have it rolling out to consumers the following month.

@DecaturBoi_Lon @HTCUSA still on track for mid-Jan lab entry with sprint. & February release. not excited about this result. team is pushing

— Jason Mackenzie (@JasonMacHTC) December 30, 2013

HTC was unable to meet its initial goal of having the update rolled out by the end of 2013, but the update shows that it is not far off. While we would all love for the device to have Android 4.3 already, and be receiving Android 4.4 soon that just isn't the case unfortunately. Here's to hoping that HTC can meet the new deadline.

Android Central

Ya know, looking back at our recap of the first six months of the year, I'm not quite sure how I survived. Well, OK. I do. And the answer is pretty simple: With a kick-ass team, of course. No one person here does it alone. I may be the one who spends too much time on airplanes, but it's the entire team that keeps this ship running.

And with that said, it's time to turn to the second half of 2013. And for as exciting as January through June was, July to now stepped it up that much more.

Let's take a look.

Moto G

These three phones need a new home

It's no secret that we think the Moto G is a pretty great phone, especially for the $179 unlocked starting price. With a whole bunch of the Moto X's awesome features at just a fraction of the price unlocked, it's an amazing value for a smartphone user at any level.

And while we know that many of you received new smartphones over the holidays, we're sure not everyone got precisely what they were hoping for. To help with that situation, we want to spread a little post-holiday cheer by giving away not one, but three Moto Gs to Android Central members.

All you have to do to win is drop a post in the forum thread linked below, and we'll pick three lucky winners to receive a fresh new 16GB Moto G.

Enter this contest in the Moto G Forums

Quickly, here are a few rules:

  • One entry per person, please.
  • These are U.S. phones, so this contest will be limited to U.S. entries.
  • The contest will be open until 11:59pm ET on Thursday, January 2nd.

Good luck everyone!

HTC to appeal decision as Google works to invalidate the patent altogether

Nokia has snagged yet another patent victory against HTC in German court today. Following a trial hoping to prove that HTC's Android-powered phones infringed Nokia's patent for transferring data over NFC or Bluetooth (that'd be Android Beam), Nokia walks away with a complete sales ban of all of the Taiwanese company's products in Germany. Nokia is not required to license patent EP1148681 as it isn't required for basic functions of the phone, but we can think Nokia would be willing to accept some money to stop further bans.

Understanding that Nokia's litigious efforts may be of harm to the entire Android ecosystem, Google has been working to invalidate the patent to keep these kinds of bans from happening. Additionally, rumor has it that Motorola and Nokia are in talks to license the patent in the meantime. As we would all expect, HTC will be appealing the ruling to try and put its devices back on sale in one of the most important European markets.

New teaser video hints at three possible sizes for whatever is Vegas bound

We're edging ever closer to CES, and as we prepare to hit Las Vegas, ASUS continues to tease the products it will be announcing in its press conference on January 6. This time out, ASUS asks "what's your number," and drops some colored balls from the sky clearly denoting 4, 5 and 6. The obvious thought would be device sizes, which if true would hint at smartphones.

But this is ASUS, and we know from past experience to expect the unexpected. We've already been teased with another two-in-one device for a CES debut, so it looks like ASUS is going to be busy next week. We'll be live from Las Vegas with ASUS on January 6 to bring you the very best of it all.

Andrew's Top 5 Accessories

The best add-ons that kept our devices charged, safe and productive

Being into smartphones is about more than just the phones themselves. You'll be hard-pressed to find someone that has a phone and hasn't gone out and purchased a case, wireless charger, headphones or some kind of other accessory. The editors here at Android Central are fortunate enough to have access to a good number of accessories for review, so we end up buying the ones that work for us.

While it isn't a long or flashy list, these are my top five accessories that I used throughout the year of 2013. Hit the break and see what I keep around for my devices this year.

Android packing

The first six months were a doozy — full of new hotness, DOA products, and a brush with celebrity??

Professionally speaking, you've got to love the week between the Christmas and New Year holidays. There's almost zero actual news, basically making it a week off from the usual grind and a chance to relax a tad before the craziness that is CES. It's also the annual time to look back on the year that was. Cliche? Sure. But it's also a practical way to fill virtual space.

And looking back is important, I think, especially in a business that moves as quickly as this one does. It's so easy to move on to the next hotness and ignore a good thing that's still available. It's easy to miss the forest for the trees, if not a single branch. Perspective can be difficult to maintain.

Matthew Panzarino said it well last week on Twitter: "something I think about a lot: the tech ‘fog of war’ which causes bloggers, writers to think in 90 day chunks." That's not unique to writing about tech, but the point stands. The carriers and manufacturers are playing chess, while everyone else is busy playing checkers.

Something to consider when you see folks arguing that a great phone can't possibly be using a processor that's "200 less" or some such nonsense.

And with that, a look back on 2013, as I saw it …
